What’s happening?

Biloela will come together again on Saturday, 1 August 2026, Show & Shine: Joel Weeks Memorial Bowls Day.

The annual event will be held at Biloela Bowls Club from 11 am until midnight. It honours 21-year-old Joel “Joeley” Robert Weeks, who died in a single vehicle accident near Callide Dam on 11 September 2023.

Since that awful day, Joel’s parents, Matthew “Tractor” Weeks and Lyn Weeks, have worked with Joel’s mates and the wider community to turn grief into something lasting.

The day has grown into a local tradition built around Joel’s generous nature. It also raises awareness and funds for projects that support health and wellbeing across Banana Shire.

The 2026 theme is “Loud & Proud, Unapologetically Joel”, with organisers encouraging bold, bright and over-the-top outfits.

The program will include lawn bowls, live music from midday, raffles, burgers, novelty events, entertainment and the well-known auction. A show and shine will also feature this year, with free entry for cars and motorbikes.

Families will have plenty to enjoy, including face painting, colouring-in competitions and a dog high jump from about 3.30 pm.

All proceeds will go towards carefully considered projects that benefit the local community.

Why it matters?

The fundraiser has become a way for Joel’s family, friends and supporters to keep his care for others alive.

Joel Weeks Legacy Fund Committee member Terry Zillmann said the event’s impact was already clear across Biloela and nearby areas.

“This is our third year now holding the Joel Weeks Memorial Bowls Day, and the benefits out of that day are really being seen,” Mr Zillmann said.

He said the first year focused on improving access to defibrillators in places where emergency help may take longer to arrive.

“We wanted to make sure that Biloela and the surrounding areas that we can’t get to in 10 minutes have got access to an AED,” he said.

Mr Zillmann said the second year helped support the Biloela helipad project, which is now moving through design and approval work.

“We’re building a helipad here in Biloela for the community,” he said.

“We’re well into the design phase of that, and in the final stages of approval before we start turning dirt.”

Local Impact

The event has already helped fund practical health projects for Biloela and the wider Banana Shire community.

The AED rollout aims to improve access to life-saving equipment during medical emergencies. The helipad project is also being developed to meet new CASA requirements and support future health transfers from Biloela.

Matthew “Tractor” Weeks said the day remained difficult for his family, but the community response had brought comfort.

“It’s a very hard day for me and my wife,” Mr Weeks said.

“But at the end of it, it’s a blessing that people are getting behind the whole concept of it.”

He said Joel’s caring nature remained the reason the event continued.

“That’s what we’ve continued this day for,” he said.

“It’s getting bigger and bigger every year and is able to put funds back into the health and well-being of the community.”

This year, the committee has put more focus on making the day feel open to everyone, not only those playing bowls.

“We wanted to make it a community event,” Mr Weeks said.

“We want the community to come because that’s what we’re trying to do, raise funds for the community.”

By the numbers

The fundraising totals show how strongly the community has backed Joel’s legacy since the event began.

  • In 2024, the event raised $65,829 for the Local Ambulance Committee to buy Automated External Defibrillators for targeted shire locations.
  • In 2025, the event raised $77,108.59 to support the Biloela helipad project, not including pledged contractor contributions.
  • The fund has helped roll out 15 AEDs across the area, with another two to be released on the 2026 Bowls Day.

Zoom In

The 2026 event will expand the family focus while keeping bowls, auctions and community support at its centre.

The show and shine is one of the new drawcards. Organisers have room for 60 cars, with about 30 to 38 already expected.

Mr Weeks said entries were open to cars and motorbikes that stand out.

“It’s free entry. It’s People’s Choice Award,” he said.

“So people can throw a gold coin in each of the tins at the vehicle and whoever gets the most money at the end of the day wins the prize.”

He said the trophies had been handcrafted by John and Brenda Fisher, who have supported the event from the start.

Mr Zillmann said Biloela Bowls Club was a strong fit for the larger program.

“What a perfect venue for a show and shine,” he said.

“You have a look around here, we’ve got the space, so plenty of entries.”

He said the day was being shaped around families and children as much as fundraising.

“This is going to be a family day,” Mr Zillmann said.

“It’s all about the children, the parents, the whole family.”

Zoom Out

The Joel Weeks Legacy Fund Inc. is also working towards a more formal future.

The fund is in the process of becoming a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. It is also seeking deductible gift recipient endorsement.

Those steps could help strengthen future fundraising and support more local health projects over time.

The committee said it had been overwhelmed by ongoing support from individuals, businesses and not-for-profit groups.

Mr Zillmann said the work of the fund reflected who Joel was.

“He was such a caring guy,” he said.

“He really looked out for other people, and what the foundation’s doing is continuing that legacy.”

This year’s fundraising will help with the remainder of the helipad project. It will also support work with Queensland Health and Biloela Hospital.

That support is aimed at making palliative care more comfortable for patients and their families.

What To Look For Next?

The 2026 Joel Weeks Memorial Bowls Day may bring the fund its biggest community turnout yet, with the show and shine, family activities and live entertainment adding more reasons for people to attend.

If approvals keep moving, the Biloela helipad could shift from planning to early ground works before Christmas. This year’s fundraising will help support the remaining work, while also assisting comfort-focused needs at Biloela Hospital.

The fund’s push towards registered charity status and deductible gift recipient endorsement could also give the committee a stronger base for future fundraising. That would help Joel’s legacy keep supporting health and wellbeing projects across Banana Shire.
