What’s happening?

Zoetis, a leading animal health business, has successfully raised $100,000 for Beyond Blue to support mental health initiatives in rural and regional Australia.

This milestone is part of Zoetis’ ongoing partnership with Beyond Blue, which began in 2016 and has now contributed $900,000 in total.

The handover ceremony was attended by Beyond Blue Chair Linda Dessau AC CVO, former Governor of Victoria, and Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman.

Lance Williams, Senior Vice President at Zoetis, emphasised their dedication to rural mental health, saying, “We are proud to once again be supporting Beyond Blue and the important work they do.”

Why it matters?

Mental health support remains critical for rural Australians, who often face barriers such as geographic isolation, stigma, and financial pressures.

Beyond Blue’s 24/7 support services, including counselling, advice, and referrals, are vital for individuals managing mental health challenges.

Lance Williams added, “The partnership between Zoetis and Beyond Blue goes beyond financial contributions. It’s about making sure that no one in rural Australia feels alone in their struggle with mental health, and that help is readily available.”

Local Impact

Zoetis works closely with rural communities, including farmers, agricultural stores, and veterinarians.

The funds raised by Zoetis will directly support Beyond Blue’s services, ensuring people in regional areas have access to vital mental health care.

Derek Schoen, a Corowa farmer and Beyond Blue board member, highlighted the importance of early intervention: “While rural Australians are known for their resilience, the pressures they face can take a toll on their mental health. It’s not always easy to ask for help, especially when you’re used to handling things on your own.”

By the Numbers:

– $100,000 raised by Zoetis this year alone to support Beyond Blue.

– $900,000 donated since the partnership began in 2016.

– 15,500 people have accessed Beyond Blue’s services thanks to Zoetis’ contributions.

Zoom In

Factors like cost-of-living pressures, climate change, and the lingering impacts of COVID-19 have amplified mental health challenges for rural Australians.

According to Beyond Blue’s Australian Mental Health and Wellbeing Check 2024, 49% of people delay seeking help until they are extremely distressed, often due to financial constraints, stigma, or believing their problem isn’t serious enough.

Georgie Harman, CEO of Beyond Blue, praised the partnership: “This donation will help ensure those living in regional areas have access to support when they need it most.”

Zoom Out

Beyond Blue’s Support Service continues to be a lifeline, helping individuals feel more understood, less distressed, and better equipped to manage their mental health challenges.

Partnerships like Zoetis ensure this service remains accessible to those in need, offering free 24/7 counselling via phone, web chat, or online forums.

Derek Schoen urged people to seek help early, saying, “Our message, when it comes to your mental health, is don’t wait until things really get on top of you. Let people know how you’re feeling or check in with someone you’ve noticed changes in. The earlier the better. You’re not alone.”

What To Look For Next?

With ongoing support from Zoetis, Beyond Blue will continue to expand its mental health initiatives, ensuring rural Australians can access care and resources without delay.
