What’s happening?
The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has launched its annual Christmas Blood Blitz, with an urgent call for 50 blood and plasma donors from Rockhampton between December 18 and January 2.
This initiative aims to ensure lifesaving blood supplies are available for patients during the holiday season.
Why it Matters?
Blood and plasma donations are critical for patients with immune conditions, cancer, trauma injuries, and women in childbirth.
The festive season often sees a drop in donations, making it essential to have a consistent supply to meet growing demand.
Belinda Smetioukh, Lifeblood spokesperson, said: “It is vital to have a constant stream of donors to ensure patient needs are met.”
Local Impact
Rockhampton residents are being encouraged to book their donation at the local Lifeblood donor centre.
Lifeblood centres will remain open throughout the holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, offering flexible opportunities to give back. “The most meaningful item you can put on your Christmas ‘to do’ list today is to lock in a blood or plasma donation and keep it,” Belinda added.
By the Numbers
- 1,500 blood and plasma donors are urgently needed in Brisbane between December 18 and January 2.
- Queensland requires over 3,500 donors in total during the same period.
- Donations benefit patients in need of cancer treatments, trauma care, and support for immune conditions.
