What’s happening?
The Honourable Milton Dick MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives, is visiting Central Queensland for the Parliament in Schools program.
Over the next two days, he and the Leader of the Nationals, the Honourable David Littleproud MP, will engage students from Longreach and nearby communities to deepen their understanding of Australia’s democratic system.
Through visits to several schools, the students will gain insights into the roles of Parliament, federation, and democracy while hearing about the day-to-day experiences of the Speaker and their local MP.
Why it Matters?
This initiative aims to make civics education more accessible, regardless of location.
By meeting students on their turf, the Speaker and local federal members help demystify Parliament and foster a new generation of informed, engaged citizens.
As the Speaker noted, “These students are our future leaders, and it is important that we equip them with the information and tools they need, to go on to be active and engaged citizens.” Such exposure to the workings of government empowers students to understand their roles within Australia’s democratic society.
