What’s happening?

The Salvation Army Rockhampton has officially launched its local campaign for the 61st Red Shield Appeal, Australia’s largest and longest-running door-knock fundraiser. The Capricornia launch event took place on Wednesday, 7 May at the Frenchville Sports Club, gathering business leaders, elected officials, and community members to kick off a month of giving and volunteering.

Why it matters

In a time when housing affordability, access to health care, and financial hardship continue to rise, the need for local support has never been greater. “We cannot do this without the ongoing and loyal support of the community,” said Major Paul Morrice, leader of the Rockhampton Salvos.

Local Impact

Funds raised in Central Queensland will stay in the region, directly supporting people in Capricornia who are facing homelessness, financial distress, and other hardships. The Salvation Army’s work spans crisis accommodation, food support, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and more.

By the Numbers:

  • In Capricornia, 82.2% of residents identified housing affordability and homelessness as their top concern.

  • 59.4% cited access to health care, while 58.4% noted financial hardship as a major issue.*

  • Across Australia, the Salvos provided over 1.76 million sessions of care, helped one person every 17 seconds, and served 1.5 million meals last year.

Zoom In

The Red Shield Appeal’s strength lies in community effort. Local volunteers can contribute by collecting at shopping centres, knocking on doors, running workplace fundraisers, or simply donating. “There is no better way to support your community,” said Major Morrice.

Zoom Out

Nationally, The Salvation Army aims to raise $38 million this year. Their network of over 400 centres and 2,000 services provides nationwide support, from youth services to family violence recovery programs.

What to Look For Next

The appeal will culminate in Red Shield Weekend on 24–25 May. Locals are encouraged to visit salvationarmy.org.au/red-shield-appeal to volunteer or donate. You can also contribute at any Salvos Store or call 13 SALVOS if you or someone you know needs support.
