What’s Happening?

The Salvation Army has launched its annual Christmas Appeal, calling on Central Queensland communities to support individuals and families facing hardship.

The organisation aims to raise $35 million nationally as financial and emotional pressures place additional strain on households during the festive season.

Through its Christmas Appeal, the Salvos hope to meet the need for assistance across Australia during one of their busiest periods.

Why It Matters

Christmas can be particularly difficult for families already struggling with household expenses. For some, the added financial pressure means making difficult choices between food, utility bills and other essentials.

Rendle Williams, The Salvation Army’s External Communications Manager for Queensland, said the organisation was preparing for another demanding festive season.

“Christmas is the busiest time of the year for the Salvos, and this year will be no different,” said Williams.

“We know that there are people in the Central QLD community that are really struggling this year, and Christmas will only intensify these struggles. Some will be forced into heartbreaking decisions between their next meal or paying utility bills, not only for themselves but also for their children.

Local Impact

Central Queensland residents can participate in the appeal through donations, volunteering and community activities organised by The Salvation Army.

The organisation also hosts Christmas celebrations, with details of local events available through nearby Salvation Army centres.

However, the appeal is not solely about fundraising. It also encourages people experiencing hardship, loneliness or isolation to seek assistance during the festive season.

“That’s why The Salvos exist– to support our community when they need it most. Whether it is for practical support like food or presents, or if you are feeling lonely or isolated this Christmas, please reach out to The Salvation Army. We are here for you, and we don’t want you to do Christmas alone.”

By The Numbers

During last year’s Christmas period, The Salvation Army reported the following assistance nationally:

  • More than 350,000: Gifts and toys received for families who might otherwise have gone without.
  • More than 158,000: Meals provided to people experiencing homelessness.
  • More than 79,000: Bed nights provided for families needing accommodation during the festive season.

Zoom In

Residents have several ways to contribute to the Christmas Appeal, depending on their circumstances.

Financial donations help support the organisation’s community work, while contributions of food and gifts provide another way to assist. Those who prefer to give their time can also volunteer during the festive season.

Zoom Out

The Christmas Appeal forms part of The Salvation Army’s broader community support work across Australia.

In addition to direct donations, the organisation is encouraging shoppers to consider Salvos Stores for affordable gifts and Christmas decorations.

According to The Salvation Army, 100% of profits from Salvos Stores support its community work nationally. This provides another way for Australians to contribute while shopping during the festive season.

What To Look For Next?

As Christmas approaches, The Salvation Army is encouraging community members to participate in the appeal and support those experiencing hardship.

Williams highlighted the importance of community generosity.

“The Salvos can’t support people this Christmas without the generosity of our local community, so please dig deep if you can. That could look like donating to our Christmas Appeal, volunteering, or attending our local events. Reach out to us, and together we can be the hope that our community desperately needs this Christmas,” said Williams.

Residents seeking Christmas assistance, local event information or donation opportunities can visit The Salvation Armyor call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58).

Donations can also be made at any Salvos Store.
