What’s happening?
Lifeblood has launched a state-wide appeal for O-type blood donors following the lowest recorded levels since 2023. The call, issued Tuesday 3 June 2025, aims to boost supply before winter illness and donor cancellations further impact reserves.
Why it matters
“O-type blood is the most in-demand type due to its use in emergencies,” said Belinda Smetioukh. “O negative in particular is a universal type that can be used when a patient’s blood type is unknown.”
O positive is equally critical and far more common — making it an accessible way for many Australians to help.
Local Impact
Rockhampton needs 50 O-type donations this week to meet hospital demand. “Even if you’ve never donated before, it’s an easy way to contribute and find out your blood type,” said Belinda.
