What’s Happening?
Rockhampton student Patrick Chopping represented Australia at the Global Youth Diplomacy Forum in Paris.
Patrick was chosen from hundreds of applicants as Australia’s only delegate. The Cathedral College Rockhampton student joined young leaders from around the world.
The program included diplomatic discussions, Q&A panels with global leaders and diplomats, and networking with United Nations officials.
Why It Matters
Patrick said the selection surprised him, especially given the number of young Australians contributing to their communities.
“I actually remember reading the acceptance email a couple of times just to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating,” Patrick said. “It means an enormous amount. Australia has so many fantastic young leaders doing incredible things in their own communities, so to be chosen as the one to represent the country is genuinely humbling.”
The forum gave Patrick an opportunity to build practical experience in international diplomacy. It also connected him with young leaders from around the world.
Local Impact
Patrick combines high school with tertiary study through the University of Southern Queensland’s Head Start program. He has developed a strong interest in international affairs through Model United Nations competitions and student leadership.
Patrick said UniSQ helped prepare him for the opportunity, particularly through his involvement with the Student Senate.
“Honestly, none of this would have been possible without UniSQ,” he said. “The University has played a huge role in shaping who I am, particularly through my involvement with the Senate, which has developed me significantly as a leader.”
By The Numbers
- More than 600 applicants were part of the selection process, with Patrick chosen from a large international pool.
- 400 young leaders were selected to attend the forum, representing countries and communities from around the world.
- 16 years old was Patrick’s age when he represented Australia at the event, making him one of the younger participants involved.

The Global Youth Diplomacy Forum took place at the Palais du Luxembourg, home of the French Senate.
Ahead of the forum, Patrick hoped to contribute a youth perspective to discussions about international relations, global governance and conflict. He also wanted to connect with other young people interested in diplomacy.
“I want to be part of a network of young leaders coordinating in this space to promote world peace and help minimise conflict,” Patrick said. “I’m mostly excited to be part of real international dialogue and to speak up for people whose voices don’t always get heard in these rooms.”

Patrick developed his interest in international affairs through Model United Nations competitions and student leadership. He also studies at university while completing high school.
His selection gave a regional Queensland student an opportunity to participate in an international forum alongside young leaders from around the world.
What To Look For Next?
Ahead of the forum, Patrick said he hoped to bring his learnings back to UniSQ. He also wanted to encourage other young Australians, particularly those from regional areas, to pursue international opportunities.
“This opportunity isn’t only about me – it’s a chance to show other young Australians that these international platforms are genuinely within reach if you put yourself forward,” he said.
