What’s happening?
Rockhampton Regional Council has announced the return of the Rural Ambassador and Showgirl competitions for the 2025 Rockhampton Agricultural Show.
Nominations are open for individuals aged 20–30 (Rural Ambassador) and 18–28 (Showgirl) who are eager to represent their community and advocate for agriculture.
Why it matters?
These iconic competitions empower young leaders to develop skills in leadership, advocacy, and professional development while promoting the importance of agriculture to rural and urban communities.
Local Impact
Councillor and Show Committee Member Grant Mathers highlighted the significance of these programs: “The Showgirl and Rural Ambassador programs are more than just awards – they’re a platform for our Region’s brightest young talents to shine, advocate for agriculture, and develop crucial leadership skills.”
Zac Garven, Advance Rockhampton Tourism and Events Manager, shared: “Participants will gain invaluable experiences, from community volunteering to leadership workshops, networking with industry leaders, and representing the Rockhampton Agricultural Show and our community.”
Emily Wickham, the 2024 Showgirl winner, reflected on her transformative journey: “Each moment has been a celebration of growth and community. This whirlwind of experiences not only enriched my life but also reinforced my commitment to empowerment and community.”
By the numbers:
- $1,000 cash prize, an official sash, flowers, and a mayoral invitation for the first-place winners.
- $500 in cash and vouchers, an official sash, and flowers for runners-up.
- Applications close on 2 February 2025.

The competitions are proudly sponsored by the Great Western Hotel and offer participants leadership workshops, networking opportunities, and public representation. In 2024, winners Emily Wickham and Shikira Stehbens showcased the potential of young leaders to elevate the agricultural community.

The Rockhampton Agricultural Show, scheduled for 12–13 June 2025, brings the country to the city with animal exhibits, competitions, carnival rides, and more. People’s Day, on 12 June, coincides with the Rockhampton Show holiday and is the most anticipated day of the event.
