What’s Happening?

From Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 April 2025, Ridgelands Showgrounds will host one of Queensland’s most loved country events – the Ridgelands Campdraft. Over 700 competitors and visitors are expected to descend on the small township for four days of thrilling competition, live music, and community fun.

Free to attend and family-friendly, the campdraft promises a jam-packed schedule with daily events starting at 10am Thursday and from 6am Friday through Sunday. There will also be a bar operating each night and live music on Saturday.

Why It Matters

Rockhampton Regional Council has granted $5,000 through its Community Assistance Program to support the event, which delivers significant benefits for the Ridgelands and wider Rockhampton community.

Mayor Tony Williams said, “Council’s support of Ridgelands Campdraft will bring tangible benefits to the Ridgelands community and the Rockhampton region.”

Cr Williams added, “We have supported the Campdraft for the past five years, and we’re proud to see it growing each year.”

Competitors come from across Queensland including Dalby, Alpha, Mackay and Roma. Local businesses—from rural stores to restaurants—benefit from the influx of visitors over Easter.

Local Impact

Ridgelands State School’s P&C handles event catering, with profits going directly back to the school. This ensures the community sees the rewards of their involvement.

Deputy Mayor Drew Wickerson, who holds the Communities, Culture and Heritage portfolio, said, “There will be free entry all weekend, non-stop competition, a bar each night and live music on Saturday night, making it a great way to spend your Easter weekend.”

By the Numbers

  • 700+ people are expected to attend across the Easter long weekend.

  • $5,000 Community Assistance Program grant supports the event.

  • $200,000+ in Council grants have supported over 20 local events this year.

Zoom In

Ridgelands Campdraft and Rodeo Association President Les Hopkins highlighted that Council funding ensures the event remains financially viable.

“In the last few years, we’ve replaced the old wooden arena with a new steel one, and installed a new toilet and shower block,” Mr Hopkins said.

He encouraged people to come watch, “some of the best drafting they will see anywhere,” and reminded locals, “It’s free to enter, with full catering and plenty of action to see.”

Zoom Out

Events like Ridgelands Campdraft boost tourism and community connection. They also play a role in preserving rural sporting traditions and supporting not-for-profit clubs. Mayor Williams noted, “It is critical to support local events that are driven and led by strong community clubs.”

What to Look For Next

Keep an eye out for the outcomes of Council’s Community Assistance Program events throughout 2025. Applications for future funding opportunities remain open.
