What’s happening?
Rheinmetall Defence Australia has expanded its regional maintenance and training capability across Northern Territory and Queensland, including Rockhampton.
The company now delivers Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) HX Logistic Vehicle maintenance training to RGM Maintenance personnel, strengthening the sustainment of defence vehicles in key locations.
Joern Buelter, Rheinmetall Defence Australia General Manager Logistic Vehicles, said,“The growing fleet in Northern Territory and Northern Queensland means that Rheinmetall has delivered OEM HX Logistic Vehicle maintenance training to RGM Maintenance personnel from Darwin, Townsville and Rockhampton, strengthening sustainment capability across the north.”
This initiative follows Rheinmetall’s delivery of more than 3000 HX Trucks and 3000 modules under the LAND 121 3B/5B program. The HX truck plays a crucial role in the Australian Army’s logistics.
Why it matters?
This expansion supports the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) strategic focus on the north and reinforces sovereign industrial capabilities. It aligns with recommendations from the Defence Strategy Review, which stresses regional defence posture improvements. “Responding to the evolving needs of the Australian Defence Force is an ongoing commitment for Rheinmetall,” said Mr Buelter.
“We have established maintenance support in Queensland (Rockhampton and Townsville), Northern Territory and in Western Australia.”
Local Impact
Rockhampton-based technicians from RGM Maintenance now receive Rheinmetall’s high-level vehicle certification, previously exclusive to Australian Army personnel at Robertson Barracks. This enhances job security and advanced technical skills for locals. “RGM is the only trade repair organisation Rheinmetall has provided this certification to and is the in-region OEM repairer of choice,” Mr Buelter said.
“This training reinforces the enduring partnership between Rheinmetall and RGM Maintenance to successfully sustain the HX vehicles in-region.”

The partnership between Rheinmetall and RGM, formed in 2022, focuses on regional employment, training, and defence-grade certification. Training programs ensure RGM personnel meet the same technical standards as ADF members. “Rheinmetall Defence Australia’s training program ensures that RGM’s certification levels are the same as those performed by Australian Army personnel at Robertson Barracks,” Mr Buelter confirmed.
Zoom Out
Rheinmetall’s strategic expansion supports broader defence efforts across Australia. Their Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence (MILVEHCOE) in Ipswich remains central to national logistics and maintenance. “Our head office maintenance bases in Ipswich at our Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence ensures the needs of Australia and its allies are well served,” Mr Buelter added.
What to look for next?
Expect continued growth in local job opportunities and specialised defence training in regional Australia, particularly as Rheinmetall deepens its presence through partnerships like RGM and projects responding to future ADF requirements.
