A New Era for Special Education in Queensland
Rockhampton Special School is set to welcome a state-of-the-art learning centre, thanks to an impressive $18.3 million investment from Premier Steven Miles’ record-setting education budget.
This initiative is part of a broader $20.9 billion commitment to enhance educational infrastructure across Queensland, focusing on better schools, more teachers, and inclusive learning environments.
A $90 Million Transformation for Central Queensland
In Central Queensland alone, the government has allocated $90 million for school maintenance and upgrades.
The new two-storey learning centre at Rockhampton Special School epitomises this commitment, featuring six learning spaces, a life skills kitchen, a manual arts building, collaboration areas, a lift, and modern amenities.
Construction began in 2023, and the centre will be operational for students later in 2024.
Empowering Education for All
Premier Steven Miles emphasised the importance of these investments: “A good start in life matters. This isn’t just about bricks and mortar – it’s about sparking new ideas, opening doors, and doing what matters for young Queenslanders.”
The sentiment was echoed by Education Minister Di Farmer, who highlighted the centre’s role in enabling students with disabilities to fully participate in their education.
Community Support and Impact
Local representatives and school officials have praised the new facility. Member for Rocky, Barry O’Rourke, noted the community’s pride in the school, while Principal Shelley Shade celebrated the transformative potential of the new learning areas.
“Our school community celebrates diversity and strives to ensure everyone feels welcome, included, and supported to reach their full potential,” she said.
Drawing Parallels with the Australian Market
This significant educational investment in Queensland resonates with broader Australian educational trends, where enhancing facilities and inclusivity in schools is a national priority.
As Australia continues to focus on providing quality education for all, initiatives like the one at Rockhampton Special School serve as exemplary models.
