What’s happening?

Four Queensland plumbers have been named ambassadors to support and promote the industry.

Nicole Byrne, Shannon Shortis, Travis Hock and Lachlan Bell were selected at the Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland World Plumbing Day event.

The group represents both regional and metro areas across the state.

CEO Penny Cornah said the ambassadors play a key role in supporting the industry.

They will help promote the value of plumbing and encourage more young people to take up apprenticeships.

Why it matters?

The plumbing industry supports public health and safe communities.

Ambassadors are expected to help address workforce demand by encouraging more apprentices.

This is especially important as major infrastructure demand grows across Queensland.

Lachlan Bell said the pressure on the workforce will increase.

“It will be the biggest infrastructure project Brisbane has seen for a very long time and the work will only continue.”

He added, “everyone needs a plumber.”

Local Impact

Rockhampton ambassador Nicole Byrne is focused on increasing apprenticeship numbers, especially among women.

She said building confidence is key in a male-dominated trade.

“My goal with this role is to inspire more women to get into plumbing and instill the confidence in them that they can do it just the same as the guys.”

She currently supports a female apprentice in her business.
