Miles for a mission: Max’s ride for Education

Max Taylor

What’s happening?

Max Taylor, an amateur adventure cyclist from Victoria, is 73 days into a 150-day, solo, self-funded ride from Melbourne to Cairns—a 5,000+ kilometre journey driven by purpose. He’s not just riding for the thrill. Max is doing it to raise $22,000 to build an earthquake-resistant school in Lombok, Indonesia, using upcycled plastic waste, in partnership with the Australian charity Classroom of Hope.

As of this writing, Max has crossed the Queensland border and is riding along the final stretch near the Gold Coast. He has now cycled more than 1,600 km, climbed over 16,500 metres, and raised $16,801.57 toward his goal.

“Every child deserves access to safe, quality education,” Max said. “This journey is my way of contributing to that vision.”

Why it matters

The funds will help rebuild SDN Dara Kunci, a school for 178 students in Eastern Indonesia. Built with recycled plastic bricks, the school will be earthquake-resistant and environmentally sustainable.

“Having grown up in Australia with access to world-class education, I know firsthand the doors it can open,” Max shared. “I believe every child deserves that same opportunity.”

Max’s ride is also deeply personal. He’s honouring the memory of his brother, who died four years ago due to mental health challenges. “By embracing discomfort and pushing through challenge, I hope to inspire others to find strength in their own struggles.”
