What’s happening?

Work has started on Powerlink‘s Calvale to Calliope River Transmission Reinforcement Project in Central Queensland.

The project forms the first stage of a wider program to strengthen the region’s electricity transmission network.

It aims to maintain safe, reliable and secure electricity supplies as Queensland’s power generation system changes.

BMD Constructions has secured the first major contract for site preparation and access works.

These early works will prepare the project area before construction begins in August 2026.

Why it matters?

The reinforcement will strengthen the electricity network between Calvale and Calliope River, supporting homes, businesses and industry around Gladstone.

Powerlink Chief Executive Dr Seán Mc Goldrick said the upgrade was important as electricity generation sources changed over time.

“Reinforcing our network between Calvale and Calliope River is an important part of ensuring the reliability and security of electricity supply for the Gladstone region as sources of power generation in the system change over time,” Dr Mc Goldrick said.

He said Powerlink considered local participation throughout the project’s planning and tender process.

“BMD has been competitively selected to deliver this important preparatory work, and we have worked closely with them through the planning and tender stages to ensure local workforces and businesses are involved as much as possible.”

Local Impact

The early works contract will create opportunities for Central Queensland businesses, suppliers and workers.

BMD Group Chief Executive Officer Scott Power said local involvement would begin during the project’s early stages.

“BMD has a strong track record delivering infrastructure across regional communities, and we understand that meaningful local participation starts early, through genuine engagement with businesses, suppliers and workers in the region,” Mr Power said.

The company expects the package to create substantial local employment opportunities alongside direct spending with regional suppliers.

“Through this early works package, we anticipate approximately $50 million in direct spend with Central Queensland businesses, including around $3 million with First Nations-owned enterprises, alongside substantial local employment opportunities.”

Mr Power said the work could also strengthen the skills and experience of businesses across the region.

“Our focus is on working closely with Powerlink and the local supply chain to deliver this work safely and efficiently, while helping build capability that supports the region well beyond this project.”

By the numbers

  • $50 million is expected to be spent directly with Central Queensland businesses through the early works package.
  • About $3 million of that spending is expected to go to First Nations-owned enterprises.
  • $501 million has been committed through the recent Queensland State Budget under the government’s Energy Roadmap.

Zoom In

Powerlink has partnered with State Development to help businesses prepare for contracts connected with major infrastructure projects.

“We have also partnered with State Development to hold a series of workshops to build capability and give local businesses confidence to tender for major projects,” Dr Mc Goldrick said.

The workshops will continue as the project moves closer to full construction.

“These workshops will continue as we head towards construction and I encourage local businesses to get involved.”

Zoom Out

The Calvale to Calliope River project forms part of wider transmission upgrades planned across Central Queensland.

These works aim to maintain network reliability as Queensland’s electricity system and generation mix continue to change.

Dr Mc Goldrick said the project was a key part of the Queensland Government’s energy plans.

“We are laser-focused in delivering this critical project, a key part of the Queensland Government’s Energy Roadmap backed by a $501 million commitment in the recent State Budget.”

Mr Power said the project would support energy infrastructure while creating economic benefits across the region.

“The project represented an important opportunity to support critical energy infrastructure while delivering real outcomes for Central Queensland businesses, suppliers and workers.”
