Lifelong educator honoured on World Teachers Day

Cheryl Hendry came to Carinity Education Rockhampton after seeing how some students need more assistance in the classroom to succeed.

One of those celebrated is Cheryl Hendry, a teacher at Carinity Education Rockhampton, whose lifelong commitment to education continues to change lives.

World Teachers Day recognises the remarkable impact teachers have on their students and communities. For Cheryl, teaching has always been about helping students overcome challenges and rediscover their confidence in learning. After retiring from 40 years in mainstream education, she chose to return as a casual teacher at Carinity Education Rockhampton, a special assistance school supporting young people who have struggled in traditional classrooms.

Cheryl says her favourite part of teaching is “being able to share with young people the joy of learning”. She believes that being a lifelong learner “shapes our lives in a positive way”. Her most meaningful moments often happen outside the classroom when former students return to thank her for believing in them. One memorable visit was from a student who said he finally understood “the wisdom to be found in Shakespeare’s plays” and thanked her for sparking that interest — a moment Cheryl says meant a great deal to her.
