What’s happening?

Australia’s most iconic outback rodeo is going even more local in 2025. The Mount Isa Mines Rodeo, running from 8 to 10 August, has unveiled two new homegrown events to its jam-packed program: the Eli Donovan Memorial Local Station Buck Jump and the Open Steer Ride. These additions will showcase local talent, honour the spirit of the bush, and offer new competitive pathways for riders from across the Outback.

“These events honour the heritage of the Isa and the hardworking people who keep the Outback ticking,” said Mark ‘Tommo’ Thompson, Chair of the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo. “It’s about community pride, showcasing the incredible talent we have right here at home, and creating new pathways for local riders to rise.”

Why it matters?

This move signals a deepened commitment to community and heritage by one of Australia’s largest and longest-running rodeos. By integrating events specifically tailored to locals — from seasoned station workers to up-and-coming young riders — the rodeo is creating a more inclusive and representative platform. It also strengthens the rodeo’s identity as both a world-class sporting event and a celebration of Outback culture.

Local Impact

The Eli Donovan Memorial Local Station Buck Jump honours the legacy of a much-loved local rider and invites regional jackaroos and jillaroos into a high-energy bucking contest — raw, rugged, and 100% Outback. The Open Steer Ride opens the gates for regional youth, giving them their moment under the same arena lights that have crowned champions for nearly 70 years. These new additions, along with affordable ticketing and camping options, lower food prices, and increased prize money, are designed to ensure locals feel front and centre at their hometown rodeo.

By the Numbers

  • Prize money has increased across every event, offering more incentive and prestige to competitors.

  • Two new events added: The Eli Donovan Memorial Local Station Buck Jump and the Open Steer Ride.

  • Three-day event: From 8–10 August at Buchanan Park, Mount Isa, featuring returning favourite acts and championships.

Nominations for the new events open at 9am on Tuesday, 23 July, and close at 5pm on Thursday, 24 July. Riders can submit their entries via nominations@mtisarodeo.com.au. The spotlight will be on Outback riders who embody grit, resilience, and the bush lifestyle. These events serve as tributes to the legacy of local legends and stepping stones for the next wave of rodeo stars.

Zoom Out

Beyond the arena, the 2025 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo is boosting its entire visitor experience. Expect reduced daily entry prices, new family pass options, lower food and drink costs, and budget-friendly camping under the stars. The Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships returns for its fourth year, now held on Sunday morning before the Open Finals. Live entertainment features rodeo legend Luke Geiger, rocking the stage Friday and Saturday nights.

What To Look For Next?

With tickets already on sale, attention now turns to the lead-up and nomination period in July. Locals are encouraged to gear up, nominate, and get involved. As Mark ‘Tommo’ Thompson put it: “The Red Dirt Arena is ready – are you?”

The Mount Isa Mines Rodeo and the Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships are proudly supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.
