On 10 August 2025, NRL legend Sam Thaiday will serve as the inaugural Ambassador for the Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships, bringing sporting star power and cultural pride to Outback Queensland.

Thaiday’s appointment adds national visibility to an event already hailed for showcasing Indigenous rodeo talent. “As the first-ever ambassador for the Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships, I’m incredibly proud to stand alongside the incredible Indigenous cowboys, cowgirls, and communities who make this event so special,” said Thaiday.

The Indigenous Rodeo Championships will take place on 10 August, closing the three-day Mount Isa Mines Rodeo from 8–10 August.

Sam Thaiday is one of the most recognisable Indigenous sports figures in Australia. With 304 games for the Brisbane Broncos, 29 State of Origin matches, and 34 international appearances, his move from league to rodeo amplifies the Indigenous narrative beyond sport. “Rodeo is about grit, heart, and heritage and the Indigenous Rodeo Championships showcases the best of that spirit,” he said.
