In a dramatic turn of events, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) orchestrated a successful rescue operation off the Bundaberg coast on Saturday, 13 January.

The distress signal received at 5 p.m. (AEST), emanated from a small recreational vessel that had capsized between Lady Elliot Island and Bundaberg.

Swift Response by AMSA

The AMSA Response Centre, showing remarkable efficiency, immediately mobilised rescue efforts.

Two helicopters, hailing from Rockhampton and Bundaberg, were deployed to investigate the situation.

The distress location, about 65 km northeast of Bundaberg, was identified by the Bundaberg LifeFlight rescue helicopter.

Despite the fading light, a life raft was deployed, ensuring the safety of the seven individuals stranded on the upturned hull.

Volunteer Marine Rescue Unit’s Heroic Effort

Adding a crucial layer to the rescue, the Volunteer Marine Rescue unit from Bundaberg reached the scene at approximately 7:30 p.m. (AEST).

Employing their expertise, they successfully retrieved all seven people from the liferaft, underscoring the significance of well-coordinated marine rescue operations.

Safe Return to Bundaberg

The rescued individuals, who were returning from a surfing trip to Lady Elliot Island, were safely brought on board the rescue vessel.

The Volunteer Marine Rescue unit skilfully navigated back to Bundaberg, concluding the operation at around 10:30 p.m.

All seven occupants were confirmed to have been wearing life jackets and had properly registered their emergency beacons, contributing significantly to their swift and successful rescue.

A Lesson for All Mariners

This daring rescue highlights the critical importance of preparedness at sea.

The actions of the stranded individuals in activating their registered emergency beacons and wearing life jackets undoubtedly played a pivotal role in their survival.

As coastal communities in Australia, including Rockhampton, remain avid lovers of water sports, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the necessity for adherence to safety protocols.
