What’s Happening?

On Christmas Day, Capricornia Training Company (CTC), part of the IntoWork Group, will host a community Christmas lunch to support those at risk, homeless, or struggling with the rising cost of living in Rockhampton.

The event, which is expected to welcome 150 guests, will be held in a beautifully decorated Christmas wonderland setting, with Bluestone Medical volunteering and providing desserts.

Why It Matters?

As the cost of living crisis deepens, more individuals and families in Rockhampton are facing homelessness and financial hardship.

With many organisations scaling back their holiday events, CTC’s initiative ensures that vulnerable members of the community still have a place to celebrate Christmas with a warm meal and a sense of connection.

CTC Program Manager April Ibbotson stressed the importance of the event: “We saw a real need in our community. With so many organisations unable to host their usual Christmas events, we knew we had to step in and make sure that those who are at risk, homeless, lonely, or struggling with the cost of living still had a place to go on Christmas Day.”

About CTC

Since 1998, CTC has been a pillar of support in Central Queensland, offering pathways to employment, training, and housing through services such as the Youth Housing and Reintegration Service (YHARS).

By partnering with community organisations, CTC continues to foster social equity and build effective support networks.

Local Impact

CTC is not only meeting an urgent need but also fostering a sense of belonging and care in the community.

Local businesses and organisations, including Bluestone Medical, have rallied to support the initiative, donating time and resources to make the day special.

By the Numbers

  • 80 guests attended last year’s Christmas lunch hosted by CTC.
  • This year, 150 people are expected to join, reflecting a significant increase in demand.
  • CTC has been providing training and social equity services in Central Queensland since 1998.

Zoom In

CTC is calling on local organisations to contribute to the event, requesting donations of Christmas food, such as meats, salads, sweets, vegetables, and non-alcoholic beverages.
“We want to ensure no one in our community feels alone or goes hungry on Christmas Day. Our lunch is open to all, and we encourage anyone who needs a place to go or knows someone who does, to join us,” added Ibbotson.

Zoom Out

The initiative reflects a growing trend of community-led responses to the cost of living crisis, as grassroots organisations step up to fill the gaps left by broader systemic challenges.

What to Look for Next?

With the help of the community, CTC aims to make the Christmas lunch a memorable and heartwarming event for all attendees. For those interested in contributing, donations and volunteer opportunities remain open.
