What’s Happening?

Coronado Global Resources has achieved a significant milestone by cutting the first coal at its Mammoth Underground Mine, part of the Curragh Complex in Blackwater, Queensland.

The mine was officially opened today by Queensland Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development, Dale Last MP.

The Mammoth Underground Mine is the first underground operation at Curragh, complementing the Curragh North and Curragh South open-cut mines.

Why It Matters

The Mammoth Underground Mine strengthens Coronado’s long-term operations in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, a region critical for Australia’s metallurgical coal exports.

The project highlights the ongoing importance of metallurgical coal in global industries, particularly steel production, and represents a substantial investment in regional economic development, safety, and sustainability.

Douglas Thompson, CEO of Coronado, emphasised: “Mammoth is expected to continue our strong track record of realising value from our existing assets… The work done here will contribute to not just our immediate future but will also lay the foundation for generations to come.”

Local Impact

The project is set to generate new employment opportunities and extend the operational life of the Curragh Complex, which employs more than 2,250 workers.

It also reinforces Coronado’s commitment to the Blackwater region through community investments and the supply of coal by-products to support Queensland’s energy needs at the Stanwell Power Station.

By the Numbers

  • 2 million tonnes of saleable coal production expected annually by 2025 when fully operational.
  • 290 million tonnes of coal reserves reported at the Curragh Complex at the end of 2023, ensuring a 20-year mine life.
  • Coronado employs over 2,250 workers across the Curragh Complex, a key contributor to Queensland’s regional economy.

Zoom In

The Mammoth Underground Mine operates with a bord and pillar system and is strategically located at the southern end of the Curragh North pit.

The mine builds on existing resources, extending asset life and introducing advanced safety and sustainability practices.

Coronado credits collaboration with the Queensland Government and project partner Eclipse Mining for ensuring a seamless start.

Douglas Thompson acknowledged this partnership, stating: “We are grateful for the support of the Queensland Government… and thank key partners Eclipse Mining for their contribution and dedication to ensure mining could commence before the end of FY2024.”

Zoom Out

The Bowen Basin continues to be a hub of metallurgical coal production, which is critical for global infrastructure development.

Coronado’s investment in Mammoth highlights Queensland’s significance in meeting international demand while addressing the need for sustainable and efficient mining practices.

What to Look For Next

Coronado plans to ramp up Mammoth’s production through 2024, targeting full operational capacity by 2025.

The mine’s success could lead to further exploration of similar projects within the Curragh Complex, continuing to bolster employment and economic opportunities in Blackwater and the surrounding areas.
