What’s happening?

From 23–25 May 2025, Club 4X4 Insurance will join over 500 volunteers on K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) for the annual K’gari Clean Up. This large-scale environmental event, organised by the Four Wheel Drive Association QLD, is now in its 24th year and coincides with National Volunteer Week.

Club 4X4 Insurance, a leading provider of off-road vehicle cover, will support this community-led initiative by hitting the sand to help remove tonnes of rubbish from the World Heritage-listed island.

Why it matters?

K’gari, known by the Traditional Owners, the Butchulla people, as “paradise,” is one of Queensland’s most pristine and ecologically significant locations. However, its beaches face growing pollution threats.

By participating in the clean-up, Club 4X4 Insurance is not just promoting environmental responsibility—it’s also reinforcing its commitment to the off-road community and the landscapes that define the Australian 4WD lifestyle.

Tony Mitchell, CEO of Club 4X4 Insurance, said: “At Club 4X4, our purpose goes beyond insuring vehicles – it’s about safeguarding and future-proofing a way of life. Supporting the K’gari Clean Up is one of the most meaningful ways we can give back to the community that built and drives us, while helping to preserve the landscape that makes Aussie 4WDing unlike anywhere else in the world.”

Local Impact

K’gari’s accessibility from Central Queensland means many Rockhampton-based 4WD enthusiasts frequently travel to the island for camping and beach driving. The clean-up ensures the island remains open, safe, and pristine for locals and visitors alike.

The event also highlights the leadership role that Queensland’s 4WD clubs, including those in Rockhampton, play in protecting natural assets for future generations.

By the Numbers:

  • 6,500+ kilograms of rubbish are expected to be removed in 2025—equal to the weight of an adult humpback whale.

  • In 2024, 80% of rubbish had washed ashore, while 20% came from visitor litter.

  • More than 20 four-wheel-drive clubs from across Queensland will join the clean-up, supported by sponsors like Club 4X4.

Zoom In

Founded in 2015, Club 4X4 Insurance was built by off-roaders for off-roaders. The company provides comprehensive insurance for 4WDs, caravans, and camper trailers, including cover for modifications and off-road recovery as standard. It has consistently invested in community events that align with its brand values of adventure and responsibility.

“The best parts of Australia are off the main road,” the brand states. “Club 4X4 is committed to keeping Australia’s most iconic destinations accessible, respected and ready to be explored.”

Zoom Out

The K’gari Clean Up is one of Australia’s largest volunteer environmental events. It showcases how the 4WD community actively contributes to preserving the very environments they enjoy. As pressures from tourism and climate events rise, initiatives like this become even more crucial.

The event also reflects a broader trend of businesses stepping into advocacy roles—bridging commercial interests with environmental stewardship.

What to Look For Next?

Keep an eye on event updates from the Four Wheel Drive Association QLD, including final collection figures and outcomes from the clean-up. Club 4X4 Insurance is expected to continue its support of community-led conservation across Queensland, with more off-road sustainability efforts likely to follow in the second half of 2025.
