What’s Happening?
More Central Queensland residents can now access free GP appointments following the Albanese Government’s investment in Medicare.
One year after the bulk billing changes began on 1 November 2025, more Capricornia medical practices are offering fully bulk billed consultations.
The expansion aims to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare costs while making GP appointments more affordable for local families.
Why It Matters
The increase follows the introduction of the Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program, which provides higher Medicare payments to participating medical practices.
Under the program, doctors must bulk bill all Medicare-eligible patients for eligible services to receive the additional incentives.
This arrangement encourages practices to offer consultations without charging patients additional fees, helping reduce household healthcare expenses.
Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said the investment was making a difference for patients and healthcare providers.
“Australian patients are paying less for their GP visits, with one in two general practices across the nation now committed to bulk billing all patients.”
He also highlighted the financial benefits for medical practices.
“For doctors and practice managers, bulk billing is now an attractive option for the first time in many years. Strengthening Medicare and delivering free visits to the doctor have only happened due to the Albanese Labor Government’s investments.”
Local Impact
For Capricornia families, the expansion provides more opportunities to access medical care without paying for eligible GP consultations.
The changes also complement other healthcare initiatives, including Medicare Urgent Care Clinics and cheaper prescription medicines.
Queensland Senator Nita Green welcomed the improvement, saying it would help Central Queensland residents manage healthcare expenses.
“Labor is delivering more bulk billing to Central Queensland.” Our investments in bulk billing, urgent care clinics and cheaper medicines are helping locals with the cost of living.”
Green also emphasised the importance of maintaining access to affordable healthcare.
“Bulk billing is the beating heart of Medicare and it’s only a Labor Government that will continue to strengthen our health care system.”
Residents looking for participating clinics can use the Australian Government’s bulk billing clinic finder to check available services in their area.
By The Numbers
The latest figures show how bulk billing access has changed across Capricornia, Queensland and Australia.
-
11 GP practices in Capricornia now fully bulk bill eligible patients, compared with four practices 12 months ago.
-
80.7% of GP services in Capricornia are currently bulk billed, an increase from 69.2% in 2023.
-
45% of Queensland GP practices now exclusively bulk bill, up from 24% last year. Nationally, more than 4,000 practices offer full bulk billing, compared with 2,304 previously.
Zoom In
Beyond regular GP appointments, other Medicare initiatives are helping Capricornia residents access treatment while reducing healthcare costs.
The Rockhampton Urgent Care Clinic has recorded 44,880 patient presentations, providing another option for people needing urgent medical attention.
Meanwhile, government figures show Capricornia residents have saved $18,157,499 through cheaper prescription medicines.
Together, these measures provide additional financial relief for households managing medical expenses.
Zoom Out
The growth in fully bulk billing practices extends beyond Central Queensland, reflecting a broader change in access to Medicare-funded healthcare.
According to the Federal Government, more than 97% of Australians now live within a 20-minute drive of a practice that bulk bills all eligible patients.
The national figures were published in Minister Butler’s media statement on 1 November 2026.
What To Look For Next?
With the Medicare incentives continuing, more Capricornia practices may consider moving towards fully bulk billed services.
Further participation could improve access to affordable GP appointments, particularly for families seeking to reduce their regular healthcare expenses.
For now, residents can check the government’s bulk billing clinic finder to see which local practices offer eligible consultations without out-of-pocket fees.
