Nominations are open for the 2027 Rockhampton Region Australia Day Awards. The awards recognise individuals, groups and organisations whose contributions help strengthen the region and its communities.
Rockhampton Regional Council is encouraging residents to nominate people who make a positive difference. Nominations close on Sunday, 13 December 2026.
Why It Matters
Mayor Tony Williams said many people contribute to their communities without seeking recognition.
“Every community has people who step up when something needs to be done and never ask for recognition,” Mayor Williams said.
He highlighted volunteers, mentors, sporting champions and community members who are willing to help others.
“The Australia Day Awards give us the chance to pause and recognise those individuals and tell them that their contribution matters.”
Local Impact
The awards give Rockhampton Region residents a way to recognise people whose efforts may otherwise happen quietly in the background.
2026 Citizen of the Year Shirley Mathers encouraged residents to consider community members whose volunteer contributions often go unseen.
“There are countless individuals across the Region whose contributions deserve to be celebrated, and a nomination can be a powerful way to acknowledge the impact they have on others.”

By The Numbers
- 15 to 30 years is the age range for Young Citizen of the Year nominees.
- Older than 18 years is the requirement for Sportsperson of the Year nominees.
- 12 to 18 years is the age range for Junior Sportsperson of the Year nominees.

The awards cover several areas of community contribution and achievement. Categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Service Award and Arts and Culture Award.
The remaining categories are Sportsperson of the Year, Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Sports Official of the Year and Community Initiative/Event.

Mayor Williams said the community often needs to put deserving people forward because they may not consider nominating themselves.
