Healthy is Happening campaign launches across Queensland

What’s happening?

The Queensland Government has launched Healthy is Happening, a new statewide campaign encouraging Queenslanders to take simple, realistic steps to improve health and wellbeing.

The campaign is delivered through Health and Wellbeing Queensland and is informed by new independent research showing many people want to be healthier but face barriers.

The campaign features real Queenslanders from cities, regions and rural towns sharing how they make healthy habits part of everyday life.

Why it matters

The research shows many Queenslanders are already doing some healthy things, even when life feels busy or costly.

The campaign focuses on progress, not perfection, and supports small changes that add up over time.

It also aims to strengthen everyday support, helping people who feel confident with their health encourage others who are trying but inconsistent.

Local impact

Healthy is Happening reflects real voices from across Queensland and responds to what people say they need.

The campaign highlights practical actions that fit daily routines, like walking, cooking at home, or improving sleep habits.

It also promotes social support as a key driver of lasting health change in local communities.

By the numbers

New statewide research surveyed more than 1,600 Queenslanders aged 25 to 54, showing both challenges and existing habits.

  • One in three Queenslanders walk daily, showing regular movement is already part of life for many people.

  • One in three cook fresh meals, despite 44 per cent saying food costs limit how healthily they can eat.

  • More than half exercise at least once a week, even though only one in five feel supported by family or friends.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said the campaign supports everyday action.

“The Healthy is Happening campaign engages and encourages Queenslanders to take concrete action in their daily lives and routines, supporting small changes that make a real difference to their health and wellbeing over time,” he said.

Dr Robyn Littlewood, Chief Executive of Health and Wellbeing Queensland, said prevention plays a major role in long-term health.

“Movement, nutrition and sleep are three of the most effective ways we can improve our health,” she said.

“Even modest increases in physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

“What Queenslanders told us, through statewide research and on-the-ground conversations across regional communities, directly shaped the campaign’s insights, creative direction and call to action.

“Healthy is Happening is about helping people take those small, sustainable steps, a short walk, an extra serve of vegetables, stretching before bed, or drinking more water. These changes stack up over time and make a meaningful difference to health and wellbeing.”

The campaign also highlights community-led efforts that support healthy habits through connection and inclusion.

Sian Anstis, who features in the campaign, founded Hike Club Social to help people feel supported while being active outdoors.

“My goal was to create both a social and active group, to help people increase confidence in hiking, socialising and being active outdoors,” she said.

“For me, time spent being active outdoors in social environments has always had such a positive impact on my health and wellbeing, so sharing that mission with others through Hike Club Social has been rewarding and genuinely effective.”

Hike Club has seen returning members improve fitness, mental health and enjoyment of being active.

“The social and adventure aspects of our group is what really makes being active feel fun, positive and inclusive, even when motivation might be low,” she said.

What to look for next?

The Healthy is Happening campaign will run statewide until March 2026.
