New therapy dog arrives at Carinity school

Miss Pickle is the newest addition to the therapy dog team at Carinity Education Rockhampton.

What’s happening?

The therapy dog team at Carinity Education Rockhampton has grown, with a new recruit arriving on campus.

Miss Pickle, a mini-Dachshund, has joined long-time therapy dog Maverick.

While the team has doubled, the newest member is very small.

School Principal Lyn Harland said Miss Pickle is a “tiny dog with a huge heart” who began her therapy dog training last year. “Her presence is a delightful reminder of resilience, patience, and hope,” Ms Harland said.

“As she learns and grows, she embodies the spirit of perseverance and unconditional love that we cherish in our school community.”

Why it matters

Therapy dogs play a key role in supporting student wellbeing.

Ms Harland said the dogs “bring a sense of warmth and connection” and “remind us of the importance of compassion and companionship” across the school.

Local impact

Miss Pickle will follow in the paw-steps of Maverick, a specially trained Tamaruke dog that has supported the Rockhampton school community since 2021.

Maverick has been a source of comfort and calm, supporting students and staff alike in managing stress and fostering emotional wellbeing,” Ms Harland said.

Maverick also visits residents at the Carinity Shalom seniors community in Rockhampton, extending support beyond the classroom.
