What’s Happening
Powerlink has begun major transmission reinforcement works across Central Queensland to ensure secure and reliable power supply for households, businesses and industries as part of the Queensland Energy Roadmap. With the potential closure of the Gladstone Power Station on the horizon, new transmission lines, substations and system stability upgrades are being fast-tracked to safeguard the region’s energy future.
Why It Matters
Gladstone Power Station has long been a cornerstone of Central Queensland’s power system. As Queensland transitions to renewable energy, reinforcing the network is essential to maintain system strength and reliability. Executive General Manager Ian Lowry said the upgrades will future-proof the network. “Reinforcing our network will mean additional high voltage powerlines, a new substation west of Gladstone and upgrades of other substations that service the region,” he said.
By the Numbers
• 4 synchronous condensers – proposed for installation across Gladstone and Central Queensland to stabilise the grid as older generation retires.
• 2 new transmission lines – planned between Calvale and Calliope River, and between Bouldercombe and Larcom Creek to improve supply.
• 1 new substation – to be built west of Gladstone, south of Mt Alma Road at East End, strengthening regional capacity.

Powerlink is already engaging local landholders and communities, with public consultation starting early next year. “We are committed to early and ongoing engagement with communities and landholders,” Mr Lowry said. “We recognise the impact of our work and are committed to sourcing local suppliers wherever possible, and identifying lasting community investment that supports the resilience of communities in the region.”
Zoom Out
The Queensland Energy Roadmap underscores the criticality of this reinforcement, positioning it as a key step toward the state’s renewable energy transition and future energy security. The planned works form part of Powerlink’s wider mission to ensure Central Queensland remains an industrial and economic powerhouse during and after the shift away from coal generation.
Local Impact
Residents and landholders in the Gladstone, Bouldercombe and Mount Larcom areas are encouraged to meet the Powerlink team and share feedback at community sessions this week:
-
Wednesday, 22 October, 4–7pm – Bajool Hall
-
Thursday, 23 October, 4–7pm – Bouldercombe Sports and Recreation Complex
-
Friday, 24 October, 8–11am – Mount Larcom Bowls Club
What to Look for Next
Community feedback from the October drop-in sessions will help determine the best locations for new infrastructure, with formal consultation on the synchronous condenser sites beginning early next year.
