What’s happening?
From 1 September, Rockhampton Regional Council will begin a four-week commissioning process for the new 2000m eight-lane buoyed rowing course on the Fitzroy River. Staff will test, assess, and adjust the course to ensure it is stable, safe, and fit for purpose.
Why it matters
The project marks a significant milestone in the Fitzroy River Rowing Action Plan, endorsed by Council in January this year. The plan aims to strengthen Rockhampton’s role as a regional hub for rowing by providing high-quality facilities that can support both training and competitive events.
Local impact
The course will not be available for public or training use during the commissioning process. Once testing is completed, it will be removed at the end of September ahead of the wet season. Council is also reviewing its Rowing Course Installation and Removal Policy to ensure a sustainable model for the community.

What to look for next
Council will provide further updates on the Rowing Action Plan as well as details from the review of its Rowing Course Installation and Removal Policy. The community is encouraged to stay engaged as the project progresses.
